The exciting Oscar season this year looks like it will come down to the wire. Unlike most years, it seems like audiences and critics agree with the films at the very top of the heap. While 1917, The Irishman or Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood represent more traditional choices, Jojo Rabbit and Parasite breathe new life into the race. It seems like Best Picture will likely come down to the Once Upon a Time, 1917 and Parasite triumvirate, and the winner at DGA tonight could win Best Director, and potentially picture, at Oscar.
UPDATE: Now the prize has gone to Sam Mendes, it feels like we can call the Oscar race. It is disappointing on some level that Mendes will win his second Oscar for directing when Bong Joon-ho and Quentin Tarantino will still be without one. However, Mendes’ efforts on 1917 clearly struck a chord with audiences and the industry at large.
