With the Disney/Fox merger, most audiences are unsure where the future of the X-Men universe will head. After all, the X-Men films have actively avoided ties to that universe, instead choosing to create their own world. With literally hundreds, if not thousands, of mutants at their disposal, this has felt like the right move. However, with the larger MCU unquestionably interested in bringing Xavier’s School for the Gifted into the fold, large questions loom over the franchise.
Today a new trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix has released. It appears that the battle has truly begun to see which characters will survive this film. Check out the trailer below:
The trailer looks to give away a pretty huge death out the gate. Whether or not Jennifer Lawrence actually survives the film aside, it appears that Sophie Turner will get to stretch the Jean Gray character. However, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult all seem poised to stop Jean from destroying the world.
The Phoenix Force entity was first introduced in 1976 and connected itself to Jean Gray. It is a cosmic force of unwieldy power and acts based on its passions at any given moment. It becomes drawn to the most powerful being near it, attaching itself to Jean because of her Telekinetic and Telepathic abilities. We’ve seen the character surface on film once before, with X-Men: The Last Stand representing a very poor job of bringing the Dark Phoenix story to the big screen.
Needless to say, this has been one of the most interesting storylines in X-Men history. Without the rather cheap out of having Wolverine kill her, this version will push the new X-Men a little harder. Jessica Chastain looks to be controlling Jean in some fashion, if not expertly probing her to go further with her powerset. This looks much darker than many of the recent X-Men films, and that is surprising given the choices to adapt Days of Futures Past and Apocalypse in recent years. Whether or not this iteration of the X-Men will continue seems up in the air, so make sure you check them out while you can.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix releases on June 7, 2019.
