One of our patron saints at We Bought a Blog has been Roger Deakins. The cinematographer remains one of the best cameramen working in the industry. After more than ten Oscar nominations without a win, Deakins finally took him his Oscar in 2017 for Blade Runner 2049.
He’s back again this year, and while he had to wait a while for the first win, his second seems to be around the corner. 1917 seems poised to be a big player at Oscar, and his win feels all but assured. With the War film taking place in real time, the film pulls off the one-shot trick with relatively few obvious cuts (and one very obvious one). It was a big deal when Birdman pulled off the move, but having to blend in the action sequences makes the timing even more integral. Thanks to Deakins legendary status, it’s great to see him move towards another gold statue, and with 1917’s wide release only a week away, we’re excited to see it for ourselves.
