With the Golden Globes coming up this Sunday, we wanted to get out in front on our predictions! Check out our picks for the Golden Globe winners below!

Golden Globes 2020 Nominees

Best Motion Picture – Drama

“The Irishman” (Netflix)
“Marriage Story” (Netflix)
“1917” (Universal)
“Joker” (Warner Bros.)
“The Two Popes” (Netflix)

The big films battling for the top prize are The Irishman, Joker, and 1917The Irishman needs this to show support from those in Hollywood, 1917 needs this to mount a formal charge at Scorsese and company. It would be surprising to see 1917 take this without winning director earlier in the night. If Joker wins, expect Film Twitter to riot.

Who Will Win: The Irishman

Who Could Upset: 1917

Who Should Be Here: Ford v Ferrari instead of Joker

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”)
Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”)
Saoirse Ronan (“Little Women”)
Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”)
Renée Zellweger (“Judy”)

Zellweger vs. Theron could swing the race. Each has an Oscar, but who will the Globes back? Ultimately you want to predict the SAG winner, but this provides an early look at which actress could sweep the season.

Who Will Win: Renée Zellweger

Who Could Upset: Charlize Theron

Who Should Have Been Here: Alfre Woodard (Clemency) instead of Cynthia Erivo

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Christian Bale (“Ford v Ferrari”)
Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”)
Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”)
Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”)
Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes”)

Another category that could swing the race in many different directions. Banderas, Driver, and Phoenix could all emerge as potential winners here. Phoenix gets the showiest, but Banderas could easily cash in his chips as the vet. Plus, Banderas could easily be the best campaigner in the group. With the Oscar race legitimately fifteen deep, the winner here could just as easily miss Oscar.

Who Will Win: Joaquin Phoenix

Who Could Upset: Antonio Banderas

Who Should Have Been Here: Robert De Niro instead of Bale

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

“Dolemite Is My Name” (Netflix)
“Jojo Rabbit” (Fox Searchlight)
“Knives Out” (Lionsgate)
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (Sony)
“Rocketman” (Paramount)

Barring a massive upset, this feels set. Should be a two-way race between Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Jojo Rabbit, with a chasim between. That said, we’ve seen the Globes redirect the race, and last year’s winner in this category went on to win Best Picture.

Who Will Win: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Who Could Upset: Jojo Rabbit

Who Should Have Been Here: Hustlers for Jojo Rabbit

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Ana de Armas (“Knives Out”)
Awkwafina (“The Farewell”)
Cate Blanchett (“Where’d You Go, Bernadette”)
Beanie Feldstein (“Booksmart”)
Emma Thompson (“Late Night”)

With lots of young talent to choose from, The Globes likes to annoint stars. Which actress earns that distinction? Ana de Armas has the surprise performance of the year, and will be a Bond girl inside of six months. Awkawfina redefines her career and potential in The Farewell. Beanie Feldstein has become a Hollywood starlet. My money is on de Armas, but Awkwafina likely deserves the prize.

Who Will Win: Ana de Armas

Who Could Upset: Awkwafina

Who Should Have Been Here: Cho Yeo-jeong (Parasite) for Emma Thompson

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Daniel Craig (“Knives Out”)
Roman Griffin Davis (“Jojo Rabbit”)
Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)
Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”)
Eddie Murphy (“Dolemite Is My Name”)

Three actors are vying for a spot at Oscar, and a win here could give them some breathing room. Leo just got a Globe for The Revanent, so we know they love him. Will they want to reward Murphy’s pure comedy/comeback or Egerton’s star-making performance? A win here for DiCaprio could also put him in a position to accidentally win a second Oscar while showing support for the film. I’m gambling on the fact that he just won, so they’ll likely hold off in favor of someone new.

Who Will Win: Eddie Murphy

Who Could Upset: Taron Egerton

Who Should Have Been Here: Song Kang-ho (Parasite) over Roman Griffin Davis

Best Motion Picture – Animated

“Frozen 2” (Disney)
“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” (Universal)
“The Lion King” (Disney)
“Missing Link” (United Artists Releasing)
“Toy Story 4” (Disney)

This will go to Disney. The question remains…which one? It would be hysterical to watch The Lion King win here, and to be honest, it’s showing here makes me think it could. Frozen 2 or Toy Story 4 makes all the sense in the world, but again, The Lion King could upset it. This is a dart throw, so let’s see it create the maximum amout of upheaval possible.

Who Will Win: The Lion King

Who Could Upset: Toy Story 4

Who Should Have Been Here: I Lost My Body for Lion King

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language

“The Farewell” (A24)
“Les Misérables” (Amazon)
“Pain and Glory” (Sony Pictures Classics)
“Parasite” (Neon)
“Portrait of a Lady on Fire” (Neon)

Parasite or we riot.

Who Will Win: Parasite

Who Could Upset: Pain and Glory

Who Should Have Been Here: Based on their rules, no one else.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”)
Annette Bening (“The Report”)
Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”)
Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”)
Margot Robbie (“Bombshell”)

J-Lo vs. Laura Dern. The Globes love stars, but Dern has been been everywhere for the last few years. A win here, and she cakewalks to Oscar.

Who Will Win: Laura Dern

Who Could Upset: Jennifer Lopez

Who Should Have Been Here: Zhao Shuzen for Annette Bening

Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Tom Hanks (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”)
Anthony Hopkins (“The Two Popes”)
Al Pacino (“The Irishman”)
Joe Pesci (“The Irishman”)
Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

An embarassment of riches. This could go any direction, but a couple interesting things to keep an eye on. Pitt has one Globe, winning for Twelve Monkeys in this category. Hanks and Pacino have multiple Globes each. Strangely though, the Globes never went for Pesci OR Hopkins (a combined 0 for 10 in competitive catgories). I’m defaulting to Pitt as the frontrunner but expect chaos.

Who Will Win: Brad Pitt

Who Could Upset: Anyone

Who Should Have Been Here: Sterling K. Brown for Hopkins.

Best Director – Motion Picture

Bong Joon-ho (“Parasite”)
Sam Mendes (“1917”)
Todd Phillips (“Joker”)
Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”)
Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

Another stacked category. This could help turn the tide in a handful of directions, and the four-way race will give a big boost to any of the big competitors. Mendes feels like weakest but it’s impossible to ignore the love the industry has for war films. Oscar will likely follow the DGA winner, but this could be a huge boost. I’m leaning toward Bong Joon-ho, because the Globes have the opportunity to introduce him in earnest to general American audiences.

Who Will Win: Bong Joonho

Who Could Upset: Martin Scorsese

Who Should Have Been Here: Greta Gerwig for Todd Phillips

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story”)
Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won (“Parasite”)
Anthony McCarten (“The Two Popes”)
Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)
Steven Zaillian (“The Irishman”)

Tarantino could lose Director, but he’s a magnet for screenplay prizes. This gives him an advantage here, but Baumbach’s Marriage Story led the Globes nominations. I’m still siding with Tarantino here though.

Who Will Win: Quentin Tarantino

Who Could Upset: Noah Baumbach

Who Should Have Been Here: For how they nominate, it’s tough to argue anyone should be here over this group.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Alexandre Desplat (“Little Women”)
Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Joker”)
Randy Newman (“Marriage Story”)
Thomas Newman (“1917”)
Daniel Pemberton (“Motherless Brooklyn”)

After the debacle about not nominating women, the Globes have a chance to award one here. Guðnadóttir would be a unique choice. However, the Newmans are coming for this prize. Thomas Newman should begin a coronation with a win here.

Who Will Win: Thomas Newman

Who Could Upset: Hildur Guðnadóttir

Who Should Have Been Here: Michael Giacchino for Daniel Pemberton

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

“Beautiful Ghosts” (“Cats”)
“I’m Gonna Love Me Again” (“Rocketman”)
“Into the Unknown” (“Frozen 2”)
“Spirit” (“The Lion King”)
“Stand Up” (“Harriet”)

This seems like a good place to reward Cynthia Erivo. She won’t win actress, but the double nomination means they like her in some capacity. However, “Into the Unknown” and “I”m Gonna Love Me Again” feel stronger thanks to their talent involved. I’m giving a slight edge to Mr. Elton John because it seems like a great way to reward him and the film as a whole.

Who Will Win: “I’m Gonna Love Me Again”

Who Could Upset: “Into the Unknown”

Who Should Have Been Here: “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” for “Cats”
