FX continues to perfect the use of the limited series year after year. The network continually challenges HBO and Netflix with some of the best programming on television. They added another big one late last year when Fosse/Verdon was announced. It brings together a hot off an Oscar Sam Rockwell with perennial Oscar hopeful Michelle Williams. The two make a formidable pair, but are nearly perfect fits to play icons Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. Check out the trailer below.

The series very much bases itself in their tumultuous romantic relationship but looks to give some power back to Verdon. While Fosse has long been regarded as a genius for his work on Broadway and in film, Verdon has her own iconic legacy. Verdon won four Tonys over her career. She remains a legendary dancer and choreographer in her own right. Yet Fosse’s loud and in-your-face approach to art made him an iconoclast. The struggle between the two is well documented and looks like it will be made into text over the course of the show.

Rockwell has the ability to get extremely intense when called upon, and his casting as Fosse is near perfection. Meanwhile, Williams runs into what will be an intense battle in Lead Actress for a Limited Series. She’s going to be up against the likes of Amy Adams, Patricia Arquette, and likely Florence Pugh. That category will legitimately look like an Oscar category come September.

The show also hides some other strong performers. Aya Cash, Norbert Leo Butz, Margaret Qualley, and Paul Reiser will all appear as well. While the focus will surely follow Williams and Rockwell, the other actors will surely add to the events. Tony-winning Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) will handle the material as the showrunner and Lin-Manuel Miranda also joined the project as an Executive Producer. It’s a real Broadway affair with Thomas Kail (In the Heights/Hamilton) also directing the first episode. For Broadway history nuts, this will be right up your alley. If nothing else, it will make for some really compelling television.

Fosse/Verdon premieres on April 9, 2019 on FX.
