For fans of the Monty Python comedian and director Terry Gilliam, the idea of seeing The Man Who Killed Don Quixote remains extremely alluring. For those unaware, Gilliam has been trying to get the film made and released for decades. A rotating group of performers have taken on roles in this film, only for the film to get delayed and pushed back. At one point, it was seen as a potential vehicle for Johnny Depp when he was in between Pirates of the Carribean films.
However, Gilliam was finally able to make the film during 2017 and all seemed promising. He cast Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce, and more in the film. Amazon Studios jumped on board to distribute the film, and it premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. However, the movie then ended up in a legal fight over who owned it. Amazon dropped the film, and it was left in the middle of a legal dispute. Yet it seems some agreement has been reached after all these months. Now, the film will indeed play thanks to Fathom Events and Screen Media, the film will actually see theaters for at least one night. The trailer can be found below.
The movie certainly looks weird, but it’s also undeniably funny. Both Driver and Pryce seem to be on the A-game, which could have great results. Driver has a busy year in 2019, and if this film can actually earn a qualifying run, a run for a Golden Globe in comedy actor does not seem out of the question. Pryce chews through the scenery, but that’s to be expected of the high sparrow. With both actors hitting their strides, this looks like a really fun movie.
The problem, of course, is the one-night screening. It is unlikely the film will get a big marketing push, and this might be for pure cinephiles more than general audiences. Still, if the word of mouth becomes positive, look for this one to break through on home video in the years to come.
