Disney+ continues to line up new series based on classic Disney properties. Not long ago, we discussed that Josh Gad will be creating his own version of The Muppets as a mini-series. The currently in-production Star Wars series, The Mandalorian has been pegged as one of the key franchises to help launch the service. With rumors that the Netflix/Marvel shows will head to Disney+ as well, it seems like the service is already pushing hard for creating its own original content. What comes as no surprise is that Disney may push for an entire series based on the iconic villains of their animated films.

According to Production Weekly, an industry website that keeps track of ongoing productions around the world, the new series comes from Steve Pearlman of Once Upon a Time and Michael Seitzman of Quantico. The new series will begin production in Dublin during the second quarter of 2020. This bodes well for it to make a 2021 or early 2022 release date.

With this news coming so early in the production process, there’s about a 30% chance this actually comes to fruition. However, if it does come to pass, this would be an exciting series for Disney to add a couple years into their programming. It will be equally curious to see if this show comes in the form of an animated series, or a live-action one. With the talent bringing it to life, it seems likely it will come in live-action. After all, Once Upon a Time was a very successful show for a long time, and its use of villains was a big reason for that. At the same time, that show literally just ended and rating dropped off towards the end. Will audiences want more like that?
